German Anmeldung Form: A Step-by-Step Guide for Expats

The Anmeldung — Germany's mandatory address registration form — is required within 14 days of moving into a new residence. Failing to register in time can result in fines of up to €1,000. The form is straightforward but the official PDF from your local Einwohnermeldeamt is entirely in German, with no official English translation provided by the government.

The form asks for your current address (Derzeitige Wohnung), previous address (Frühere Wohnung), and personal details including full name, date of birth, nationality, marital status, and religious affiliation (the last field is optional and relevant only for the Kirchensteuer church tax). If you are registering multiple family members, one form covers the entire household. The Wohnungsgeber — your landlord or the property owner — must sign the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung section confirming you live at the address.

Bring the completed form to your local Bürgeramt with your passport or national ID, the signed landlord confirmation, and your lease agreement. Appointments can be booked online at berlin.de, muenchen.de, or your city's equivalent portal. After registration you receive the Meldebescheinigung — a confirmation document you will need for opening a German bank account, registering with the Finanzamt, and applying for residency permits.
