WhatsApp Chat as Legal Evidence: Export and Format Guide
Courts increasingly accept WhatsApp chat records as evidence in civil and criminal proceedings. German courts (Zivilprozessordnung §371) allow digital evidence when authenticity can be demonstrated. The challenge is converting a raw WhatsApp export into a document that preserves timestamps, sender names, and message sequence without modification.
To export your chat, open WhatsApp, tap the conversation, select More → Export Chat. Choose With Media if images are relevant to the case. You receive a .zip file containing a .txt transcript and any attached files. The .txt file alone is sufficient for text-only evidence. The key requirement for legal admissibility is that the original export file metadata must remain unmodified — do not open and re-save the .txt file in a word processor.
A formatted PDF preserves the chain of custody better than a raw text file. Each message should show sender name, timestamp in the original timezone, and message content on a separate line. Numbering messages sequentially helps attorneys reference specific entries in submissions. Always confirm admissibility requirements with your legal counsel, as standards vary by jurisdiction and case type.
